Branding For Architects in the Era of AI: Insights from the AIA-WIA Long Island 2024

“Stand out from the crowd.”

You’ve probably heard this phrase countless times in motivational speeches, and for good reason. In a world driven by Artificial Intelligence—where thousands of stories, photos, and figures can be generated in a single click—differentiation and visibility are crucial to success in any field. But while it’s easy to say, it’s often much harder to put into practice.

On June 20, 2024, I had the privilege of speaking at the AIA – Long Island Women in Architecture Committee event about personal branding and marketing. I was incredibly grateful for the opportunity, not just because it was an honor to share my insights with fellow professionals in the Long Island AEC industry, but because I got to discuss a topic that’s deeply meaningful to me. Without it, I wouldn’t have had the chance to speak at this event in the first place.

Architects, now more than ever in the era of AI —it’s time we fully embrace the power of personal branding.

A fantastic turnout. Meeting different AEC Professionals at Long Island was one of the best parts of the session.

From Invisible Child to Business Owner

During the session, I opened up about being the “invisible child.” I was shy and introverted. I hardly ever spoke up, if at all. It wasn’t until I moved to the US at 19 for school that I realized I had the power to reshape the narrative I’d been living.

There, I discovered that what I once thought was my weakness could actually be my greatest strength. Focusing inward allowed me to hone my skills, develop my expertise, and eventually, carve out a distinct path in the architectural industry. This transformation wasn’t just about personal growth; it was the beginning of my journey toward becoming the owner of a successful business.

But here’s the key takeaway: none of this would have been possible without a strong personal brand.

By embracing and sharing my authentic self, I was able to connect with others in meaningful ways, build a network, and establish a reputation that set me apart in the competitive field.

From quiet kid to keynote speaker. Personal branding gave me the confidence to step in front of an audience and share my story.

Why Personal Branding Matters in the AI Era

As AI automates more and more architectural tasks soon, some are left to wonder about the future of their careers. To this, I say fear not. While it is an efficient, cost-saving tool, AI can never replace the value architects bring to the table. It’s called ‘artificial intelligence’ for a reason—in the face of human ingenuity and authenticity, AI will always fall short.

This is why personal branding and marketing in this age should not just be a suggestion. It should be the norm. For architects, this means more than just showcasing your portfolio or listing your credentials. It’s about telling your story in a way that resonates with clients, collaborators, and peers.
Behind the microphone. Podcasting can be a great tool in building your brand.
Personal branding helps you stand out in a market that’s more and more influenced by automation. With it, you can position yourself as a thought leader, build trust with potential clients, and open doors to new experiences that might otherwise remain closed. Trust me, in a profession that values innovation and creativity, your brand will be what sets you apart and pushes your career forward. It’s uniquely yours. No one else, not even AI, can replicate it.

Building Your Brand: Practical Steps for Architects

So, how do you build a strong personal brand as an architect in the age of AI? During my talk, I outlined a few practical steps, and now I’m excited to share them with you.

1. Define Your Story

Reflect on your journey—what makes your path unique? What are the instances that shaped your perspective as an architect? Your story is the foundation of your brand.

2. Leverage Digital Platforms

Use social media, blogs, and online portfolios to share your thoughts and work. Consistency is key—regularly update your content to stay relevant.

3. Network with Purpose

Attend trade events, join organizations, and connect with peers who share your interests. Networking is not just about collecting contacts; it’s about building relationships.

4. Showcase Your Expertise

Write articles, give talks, or start a podcast. Sharing your knowledge positions you as an authority in your chosen industry and attracts the right opportunities.

5. Be Authentic

Authenticity is the core of a strong personal brand, especially at a time when digital tools dominate the field. Be true to who you are, and let your personality shine through in everything you do.

And remember: Personal branding is more than just a buzzword. It’s a vital tool for those who want to thrive in today’s competitive landscape. AI may assist with technical tasks, but the heart of architecture—the ability to shape spaces that inspire, connect, and resonate with people—remains firmly in human hands. To do that effectively, we first need to shape how we’re perceived.

Your brand is your story. It’s time you tell it right.
